Antivirus genius John McAfee committed suicide in prison after a Spanish court ruled he would be extradited to the United States. Before his death, there were no signs of anything suspicious. His legal team is also planning an appeal.
McAfee, who founded an antivirus company in his name days before his suicide, has defended himself that he was targeted and will be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
"If I am extradited, I will almost certainly spend the rest of my life in prison because the United States wants to use me as an example," he said, in one of the last photos taken at the time, looking fit and healthy.
However, the Spanish court said the maximum sentence he will be given for tax evasion is five years. On the other hand, John McAfee also stated that his health condition is not good. However, the court ruled that this was insufficiently reasoned.
"However, even though he is important socially, economically, and in other areas, that does not mean he is above the law," the court said of his status as a technology frontman.
McAfee has been jailed for five months in Spain and is doing well, with sources even calling him a role model for other inmates. He got no sanctions and lived a normal life in prison.
In his final moments, McAfee was alone in his jail cell around 4 p.m. His mobile friend was not there. Then at 6 p.m., officers found him hanged. Aid was attempted, but his life could not be saved.
Authorities say all indications point to suicide, although an autopsy is still being performed to confirm that for sure. John McAfee's lawyer, Javier Villalba, said his client's death had shocked his wife and other family members. He wants to know the ins and outs of the antivirus captain's death.
Villalba says that it has successfully refuted some of the accusations made against John McAfee. He admitted that he had no evidence that McAfee's death was suspicious, but he regretted the brutality of the law that John McAfee had to spend time in prison and could not be released on bail, even though he did not commit violence.
"We managed to release seven out of ten charges against him and why is he still considered a dangerous person to escape if released? He is known to the world, where can he hide?" he screamed.
