John McAfee, the founder of the McAfee antivirus company, was found dead in a Spanish prison cell. There is strong suspicion that he committed suicide and now, the preliminary autopsy results are out.
An autopsy on McAfee's body led to the initial conclusion that he had indeed committed suicide, moments after a court ruled he would be extradited to the United States to face tax evasion charges.
The results of the autopsy have not been received by McAfee's family, where recently, his wife believed that the United States government had a role in his death. They requested a second autopsy from an independent party.
A source familiar with John McAfee's death said he had prepared a note in his pocket before killing himself. However, the content of the letter has not been published.
John McAfee, who founded an antivirus company in his name days before his suicide, defended himself saying he was a target and would be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
"If I am extradited, I will almost certainly spend the rest of my life in prison because the United States wants to use me as an example," he said, in one of the last photos taken at the time, looking fit and healthy.
The 75-year-old has been jailed for five months in Spain and is doing well, with sources even calling him a role model for other inmates. He got no sanctions and lived a normal life in prison.
In his final moments, John McAfee was alone in his jail cell around 4 p.m. His mobile friend was not there. Then at 6 p.m., officers found him hanged. Help was given, but his life could not be saved.
