Having been said to have built a chipset factory in Wuhan, China, by the end of 2020, Huawei is now said to start producing chips at the factory.
This Kirin chip is produced by Huawei's project called 'HiSilicon Factory'. This project, which first started in 2019, Huawei has invested 1.8 billion yuan, and is expected to return the investment in 2022.
Well, some industry sources say that Huawei will start producing its own 'wafer fab' in Wuhan. Production is expected to begin in 2022.
HiSilicon was previously able to design fast chips with 5nm manufacturing such as the Kirin 9000. However, production is still carried out by TSMC, which no longer produces chips for Huawei because they are on the United States government Entity Register.
It is not yet clear whether the HiSilicon chip factory will be able to produce chips with 5nm manufacturing. Because so far only TSMC and Samsung can produce chips with 5nm manufacturing.
But what is clear is that the Huawei factory is said to produce optical communication chips and modules and design its own micro-networks. Currently the factory itself has more than 10 thousand employees who are assigned to do research and development in various aspects, such as chip models, laser radar, and optical communication modules.
In addition, the factory in Wuhan is also said to be the only factory in China that can develop a coherent optical DSP chipset.
The factory in Wuhan is named the Wuhan Huawei Optical Factory Project, and is built on an area of 208,000 square meters. The facility is also Huawei's largest research and development base in China. They also plan to build another chipset factory, which will be located in Shanghai.
