The founder of the famous antivirus company, John McAfee, committed suicide in a Spanish prison. This tragic incident was called shocking by his lawyer.
Spanish authorities said what happened at the scene indicated that the 75-year-old McAfee committed suicide. A court in Barcelona has ordered an autopsy on McAfee's body to determine the exact cause of death.
The results of the autopsy will only be known in a few weeks. John McAfee's lawyer, Javier Villalba, said his client's death had shocked his wife and other family members. He wants to know the ins and outs of the antivirus captain's death.
"This is like pouring cold water on his family and his legal team. Nobody expected him, he didn't say goodbye," he said, as quoted by the Associated Press.
Villalba said that his party successfully refuted some of the accusations made against John McAfee. He admitted that he had no evidence that McAfee's death was suspicious, but he regretted the brutality of the law so that McAfee had to be in prison and could not be released on bail, even though he did not commit violence.
"We managed to dismiss seven out of ten charges against him and why is he still considered a dangerous person to escape if released? He is known to the world, where can he hide?" he screamed.
Before his death, McAfee and his legal team had planned to appeal against extradition to the United States. But McAfee is dead.
McAfee was arrested by Spanish authorities late last year on charges of tax evasion in the United States. About a week ago, McAfee spoke in a Spanish court to defend himself against an attempt to be extradited to the United States.
If extradited to his home country and found guilty, John McAfee could face up to 30 years in prison. McAfee later said the charges were politically motivated and he feared he would spend the rest of his life in a US prison.
"If I am extradited, I will definitely spend the rest of my life in prison because the United States wants to use me as an example," he said.
