Release of Windows 11, Microsoft Attacks Apple

Microsoft just announced Windows 11 and a series of new features in a virtual event. At the end of the event, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella appeared to attack Apple.
In his closing remarks, Nadella said Windows 11 makes Microsoft a different company because it offers an open platform, unlike Apple.

"Now the world needs a more open platform, which allows applications to become platforms," said Nadella, as quoted by CNBC, Friday (6/25/2021).

These comments were made by Nadella when Apple was under close scrutiny from the United States government and continued to be criticized by other companies for policies in the App Store that were considered disadvantageous to developers.

As you know, App Store policy prohibits developers from installing apps that look like competing app stores, for example apps that contain links to download many other apps.

Last year, Apple also banned Microsoft from installing the xCloud app that would allow users to access some cloud-based video games on iOS. Although the application is already available on the Google Play Store.

Apple also takes a 30% commission from in-app transactions, such as subscription fees or in-app purchases. After being criticized, the company created by Steve Jobs lowered its commission fee to 15% for small developers with an annual income of less than USD 1 million.

While Apple is known for its closed ecosystem, Microsoft does the opposite. With Windows 11, Microsoft introduced new policies in the Windows Store that Nadella claims can provide greater opportunities for developers.

For example, developers can choose a non-Microsoft payment system in their application. With this policy, developers can take home all revenue from in-app transactions without having to pay a commission to Microsoft.

Microsoft users will also still be able to download apps and games from non-Microsoft app stores, such as from Epic Games and Valve. Microsoft is also working with the Amazon Appstore to make Android apps accessible on Windows 11.

"Windows recognizes that there is no personal computing without private agency," Nadella said.

"Personal computing requires choice. We want to remove the limitations that sometimes still exist until now and provide choice and connection," he concluded.
