The Snapdragon 888 has a new sister, the Snapdragon 888 Plus, which Qualcomm released at MWC 2021 with faster performance.
The Snapdragon 888 Plus has a higher clock speed, namely the Kryo 680 CPU which has been boosted from 2.84GHz to 2.995 Ghz (rounded to 3GHz in Qualcomm's marketing language).
This CPU is still divided into three parts like the Snapdragon 888. That is 1 Cortex-X1 core (2.995GHz), 3 Cortex-A78 cores (2.42GHz), and 4 Cortex-A55 cores (1.80GHz).
In addition, artificial intelligence (AI) performance is also improved with the 6th generation AI Machine. Its computing capacity has increased from 26 trillion operations per second (TOPS) to 32 TOPS, or an increase of 20 percent.
Qualcomm did not touch the GPU used by the Snapdragon 888 Plus, aka the performance and speed are still the same as the Snapdragon 888. Maybe because the Adreno 660 is already operating at a very high speed, it also sucks high power.
Mid-year chip updates are nothing new for Qualcomm. They have previously done the same for the Snapdragon 855 Plus and 865 Plus.
Even from the beginning of 2021, they also have the Snapdragon 870 which is the Snapdragon 865 Plus plus, which has a higher performance improvement with a faster clock speed.
It may not be long before phones with Snapdragon 888 Plus appear on the market. Qualcomm promises that the first phone with the chip will be on display in Q3 2021.
Mobile phone manufacturers that have confirmed that they will use the Snapdragon 888 Plus include Honor through the Magic 3, then there are also Motorola, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Asus that plan to release phones with systems on a chip.
