Instagram has just launched a new security feature called Security Checkup. This function is launched to help users whose accounts have been hacked.
When a user whose Instagram account is hacked logs in again, they will be asked if they want to start a security check. Users will also be guided through the steps required to secure their accounts.
The intended steps include checking login activity, reviewing profile information, verifying accounts that share login information, and updating account recovery contact information such as phone numbers or emails, as quoted from the Instagram blog, Wednesday (14/7/2021 ).
In addition to introducing Security Checkup, Instagram also shares tips for users to keep their accounts secure, such as:
- Enable two -factor authentication
Instagram advises users to enable two -factor authentication (2FA) to receive a login code via SMS or an app like Google Authenticator. In the near future, Instagram users will also be able to receive 2FA codes via WhatsApp.
- Update phone numbers and emails
Make sure the phone number and email you registered as account information on Instagram is up-to-date. This latest data is important because it can help users recover a hijacked account even if the information has been altered by hackers.
- Be careful with incoming DMs
Recently, Instagram has discovered many fake accounts claiming to be Instagram and sending direct messages to access sensitive information such as passwords. DMs like this are mostly scams and violate Instagram policies
Instagram emphasizes that they never send DMs to users. The Facebook-owned app says it only sends emails to users that can be checked on the ‘Email from Instagram’ tab in settings.
- Report suspicious content and accounts
Instagram users can report individual content or accounts that are considered suspicious by opening an account and reporting directly from their profile.
- Enable login requests
After activating 2FA on Instagram, users will receive an alert if someone tries to log into their account from an unknown device or browser. Users can accept or reject this login request and see a list of devices that can access their Instagram account.
