Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has pledged to spend at least USD 100 million building supercomputers in the UK.
Huang said this while speaking at The Six Five Summit, which said that the funds are just the start of building the Cambridge-1 supercomputer. in October 2020 they said they would spend around USD 55.6 million on the project.
According to Huang, Cambridge-1 will be the fastest computer in the UK, and will be used by external researchers for various purposes, such as artificial intelligence research in the healthcare industry.
Cambridge-1 will also be one of the world's fastest supercomputers, and is expected to accelerate research in digital biology, genomics, and quantum computing.
For this reason, Nvidia is working with AstraZeneca, one of the makers of the COVID-19 vaccine, to accelerate the discovery of new drugs and create AI models for health purposes, for example chemical structures.
Transformer-based neural network architectures, which have only become available in recent years, allow researchers to use very large data sets using self-supervised training methods. Therefore, they do not need to label the manual for each exercise.
According to the VP of healthcare at Nvidia Kimberli Powel, AstraZeneca, GSK, Guy, and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies, are using supercomputers to develop a deeper understanding of brain diseases such as dementia, use AI to design new drugs, and improve accuracy in finding diseases caused by human gene variations.
Powell also said the supercomputer will be owned and operated by Nvidia, but open to the public.
"We believe there is a huge opportunity in the field of health care. We have been doing simulations for 15 years and AI is experiencing a high rate of development," said Powell.
Nvidia rejected the notion that their investment had anything to do with Nvidia's efforts to acquire ARM, which is currently being investigated for a possible monopoly if the acquisition goes through.
However, according to Powell, this super computer project has nothing to do with the acquisition process and they have been planning this computer for a long time.
