The popularity of the Epic Games Store turned out to be very high after they had given away Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V).
It was revealed in the Epic vs Apple trial documents, that the Epic Games Store got seven million new users when they made GTA V free. In fact, their servers were down because they were unable to serve these millions of new users.
It was not revealed how many claimed GTA V when it was free. But the surge in the number of new users is only inferior to when the Epic Games Store free Civilization 6, where they got 2.5 million new users.
Meanwhile, under it is Subnautica, with 1 million new users. However, in other aspects, the Epic Games Store is still far from being compared to Steam.
The monthly active users of the Epic Games Store have increased dramatically after they made the popular game free. However, the number of monthly active users has only reached 58 million, while Steam has reached 120 million.
But Epic itself has big plans for the future, namely a plan they call 'Project Moonshot. The target of this plan is that they want to achieve a gross income of USD 1 billion.
Through this project, Epic will continue to promote by providing free games and also continue to try to attract developers to present exclusive games on its platform.
Unfortunately, the growth in the number of monthly active users has recently slowed down. In December 2020, Epic recorded 56 million monthly active users, or only an increase of 2 million users in seven months.
In comparison, between December 2019 and December 2020, Epic's average monthly active users increased by two million monthly users.
