Sony Spends USD 1.175 Billion on Crunchyroll Acquisition

Sony revealed, after spending months, finally the acquisition of the Crunchyroll anime streaming service is complete. The nominal disbursement is quite staggering, up to USD 1.175 billion.
However, it is not yet known when these services will be merged. One thing is for sure, with these new resources, Crunchyroll is able to expand its reach, distributing content through various Sony channels such as the PlayStation.

"Anime is a fast -growing medium, able to captivate and inspire the emotions of audiences around the world," said Kenichiro Yoshida, Chairman and President and CEO of Sony Group Corporation.

In his statement, he also said that with the synergy of Crunchyroll and Funimantion, Sony may be closer to creators and fans, who are the lifeblood of the anime community.

This figure is an extraordinary value for the Anime business owned by this Japanese company. Toy Vinciquerra, as CEO and CEO of Sony Picture Entertainment Inc., stressed that Sony wants to create the best anime experience for fans.

“We have the opportunity to serve anime fans and provide the best experience on all platforms they choose, from theater, events, home entertainment, games, streaming and TV,” Vinciquerra said.

“Our goal is to provide a unified anime subscription experience as quickly as possible,” he added.

With the ownership of Crunchyroll and Funimation, competition in the streaming services industry is slowly diminishing. There is a possibility Crunchyroll could be associated with Funimation.

News of this acquisition has actually been aired since December 2020. For some time they have been keeping an eye on the anime streaming service.

The goal, which is to bring in 3 million customers, is to be part of Sony’s Funimation. The purchase was, in fact, made through Funimation Global Group, LLC, a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., Aniplex.
