The Taliban group came to power in Afghanistan. This has caused panic among some residents there, one of which is related to biometric databases and digital traces that the Taliban can use to track enemies and their families.
Amnesty International said that thousands of Afghans including academics, journalists and activists were at risk of retaliation by the Taliban.
Over the years, a database system was built in Afghanistan including digital identity and biometrics for elections. Well, the technology could be exploited to attack vulnerable groups, for example those associated with the previous government.
"We recognize that the Taliban currently appears to have had access to various biometric databases and their devices in Afghanistan," the Human Rights Group said on Twitter.
"This technology likely includes access to a database with fingerprints, retina scanners and facial recognition technology," they added.
They also provide guidance on how to erase digital footprints for Afghans who want it and how to escape biometrics. For example, looking down, wearing objects to hide the face, heavy makeup to avoid facial scanners. However, it is recognized that fingerprint and retina scanners are more difficult to trick.
This is considered worrying, especially if the database is used by the Taliban to target anyone involved in the previous government or working for international institutions to human rights activists.
There are reports that it may have already happened. The Taliban are said to have seized US biometric devices and then searched them door to door, targeting officials, former soldiers, journalists and those who work for international non-profit organizations.
The Taliban themselves actually promised to lead in peace, that all citizens would be protected for their lives, property and honor to create a peaceful and safe environment for their country.
