These Two New MediaTek Processors for 5G Phones

MediaTek released two new processors, or rather system on a chip (SoC), for 5G phones, namely Dimensity 920 and 810.

Both of these SoCs use 6nm manufacturing and seem to be designed with a very good speed, power usage and price ratio.

From the name used, it can be seen that the two SoCs are intended for phones with different price classes, and the 920 is a more powerful variant. For reference, the Dimensity 900 series is usually used in cellphones priced at USD 500 and above.

There are some significant differences in capabilities between the Dimensity 920 and 810, such as 4K HDR video recording capabilities, adaptive refresh rate capabilities up to 120Hz, and a new 5G modem with optimized usage in various scenarios.

Then MediaTek also claims that the GPU with a new design in the Dimensity 920 has 9% better gaming capabilities than the Dimensity 900.

Meanwhile, Dimensity 810 is a SoC that is intended for phones with a price class of USD 350 to USD 500. Some of the improvements that MediaTek promises are performance improvements that have an immediate effect on users.

For example, speeding up application loading can be obtained from eliminating bottlenecks between storage and processors. In addition, MediaTek also promises better heat management software, because usually cheap phones don't use fancy cooling systems like vapor chambers and the like.

The Dimensity 810 also supports cameras with a maximum resolution of 64MP, including a camera system that uses a special sensor for bokeh.

MediaTek itself in Q3 2020 then overtook Qualcomm as the largest manufacturer of mobile chips. They have surpassed Qualcomm throughout 2020 and are now the chip market leader.

A market analysis by Omdia published by DigiTimes said the Taiwanese company shipped a total of 351.8 million chip units to major smartphone manufacturers in 2020.

This figure represents an increase of up to 47.8% from the previous year, bringing MediaTek's market share up to 27.2%. This achievement was enough to overthrow the previous ruler, Qualcomm, which had a market share of around 25%.
