Android 12L Offers Big Upgrades for Foldable Phones

At the Android Dev Summit 2021, Google confirmed that it would provide an operating system update specifically for devices with large screens, both tablets and foldables.

The update is called Android 12L, which promises to make Android 12 run more smoothly on devices with large screens. In this version of Android, the Android interface is optimized for large screen use.

For example, the placement of the home screen access buttons, lock screen, notifications, Quick Settings, and others. Google also states that devices with a pixel density of over 600 will display a two-column layout to maximize screen size.

For example, the Quick Settings menu will appear on the left side of the screen while the notification panel will be locked on the right side of the screen. So users can access these two menus at once.

Android 12L also introduces a new taskbar that allows users to easily switch between apps and also makes it easier for them to open apps in split screen mode. According to Google, this split screen feature can be used in all applications, even in applications where the window size cannot be set manually.

This operating system update will only be available starting in early 2022. However, the features can be tested on the developer preview page for Android 12L.

On that page you can download an Android 12L emulator to try it out. Google also claims to be working with OEM partners to provide 12L updates, including a 12L developer preview on the Lenovo P12 Pro.

This release of Android 12L seems to have been picked up by Google as more and more foldable phones are on the market. Or maybe because Google will release a foldable phone in the future.
