Facebook officially changed its name to Meta. This change also invites various reactions from netizens around the world, more are pro or con, right?
Meta was announced directly by Mark Zuckerberg at the Connect 2021 event. Meta will be the parent of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other applications.
The name change is in line with the Metaverse plan that Zuckerberg has echoed in recent months. Metaverse is a shared virtual environment and ecosystem that users can access online.
"Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens to immersive experiences like augmented reality and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology," Zuckerberg said.
After being announced, Meta became a hot topic for netizens, to the point that it became trending on Twitter. There are those who welcome it, but some question the change amid criticism regarding how this social media effort is hate speech, hoaxes and safety for teenagers.
