Spotify Tests TikTok-style Video Format

After doing a lot of other social media, Spotify is now reportedly also testing the TikTok-style video feed feature on its music streaming service.

This feature is called Discover with a full-screen vertical format where the gameplay is similar to the TikTok application. Users can scroll through the music videos they want to watch.

Although in the testing phase, some of the users involved in this test, the Discover feature will appear as a fourth tab in the navigation bar below the Spotify app between Home and Search.

This feature was first discovered by Chris Messina, he shared a video of the Discover feature. He discovered the feature in Spotify's TestFlight build (beta version for iOS), where a new icon in the navigation toolbar takes the user directly to the video feed when tapped.

Users can then scroll up and down to browse the feed, just as they do on TikTok. Users can also give Likes by clicking on the heart icon, users can even tap the three-dot menu to bring up information about the song.

Quoting from Techcrunch, Spotify previously saw the opportunity from also testing the Stories feature which allows influencers to post Stories to introduce their own curated playlists. But that option was never available to all Spotify users until recently.

Meanwhile, the TikTok format has been adopted by many popular social platforms such as Instagram (Reels), Snapchat (Spotlight), YouTube (Shorts) and Pinterest (Idea Pins). And it is proving to be an ideal format for content discovery.

Netflix, for example, recently adopted a short-form vertical video feed in its own app called the Fast Laughs feature, offering clips from a content library and tools for saving programs to a watch list or starting streaming.

Similarly, Spotify's video-based Discover feature can help introduce users to new music and offer a way to show their interest in Spotify in a familiar format.
