Answering two questions from Jeff Bezos, this woman was immediately hired to work for Amazon. What is the question?
Ann Hiatt is the woman who submitted her CV to the company in 2002. She didn't think much of it and didn't expect much but she got an interview call for a junior assistant role. After back and forth interviews, Hiatt finally got to the front of the Amazon founder.
Of course, he was nervous. Bezos, pen in hand and standing in front of the blackboard, asked him two questions.
Hiatt recalls two questions Bezos asked him during the interview, with the first question being a brainteaser.
"I'll count them," said Bezos, when he asked the first question.
"I want you to estimate the number of panes of glass in the City of Seattle," he continued.
This question frightened Hiatt for a moment. But he quickly digested it and realized this was just a test to find out how his brain worked.
He started by estimating Seattle's population and then he broke down the totals assuming each had a home, mode of transportation, office and school.
"So I suggest that we base the estimate on that average," he said. Then Bezos and Hiatt started doing some deep and fun 'calculations'. Until finally Bezos let out a few words 'seems right' after counting.
For his second question, the Blue Origin boss asked Hiatt about his career goals. He also told Bezos that Amazon has proven to be a company full of ambitious and passionate people and he wants to be like them and learn what they know. Bezos ended up hiring him right then and there
