Microsoft last updated Notepad in 2018, and now they've finally updated the text editor app for Windows 11.
In this update, Microsoft is trying to make up for the slow pace of the update by making major UI changes, including rounded edges, a new menu display, and a new settings page.
The interface is updated using Mica, a dynamic interface that is transparent enough, so the colors will follow the color of the page behind it, like the wallpaper used on the desktop.
What is also new from Notepad is the dark mode, where users can activate it via the settings page. But specifically for those who have activated dark mode in Windows 11, Notepad will follow the dark mode settings from Windows 11.
About the ability of text processing there are also new features. Namely, the search/find/replace feature is better, and looks more modern and easier to use, as quoted by us from Techspot, Monday (12/13/2021).
Then the Notepad developers added a multi-level undo feature, which is reportedly the most requested feature by the community.
Microsoft also claims to know that previous versions of Notepad still have some bugs that need to be fixed, and they promise to fix those problems in the future.
The new Notepad for Windows 11 is only available for Windows 11 Insiders, and can be found via the Microsoft Store. Non-Insider Windows 11 users of course have to be patient to be able to try out the new Notepad.
In the 2018 update, Notepad introduced several new things such as new shortcuts and improved find/replace and word-wrap features. But after that, there was no update at all for Notepad.
On the other hand, text editors made outside of Microsoft continue to grow, both free and paid, such as Sublime Text, Notepad++, and Atom.
