Oppo will hold the Oppo INNO Day event in China next week, where the phone vendor will unveil its latest hardware technology. A week earlier, Oppo showcased the latest camera technology that is likely to debut on its flagship phones.
Through its official Twitter account, Oppo showcased retractable camera technology for mobile phones. As the name suggests, this phone's camera can go in and out like a digital camera lens when zooming in and zooming out.
The teaser video shared by Oppo shows a mysterious gray phone with a fairly large camera module on the back.
Oppo showed how the camera can still work even when the phone is wet. It seems that Oppo managed to install this retractable camera without reducing the waterproof capability of the phone.
In addition, this phone also seems to have a fall detection mechanism that will likely protect the camera module if the phone suddenly falls while the camera is in use, as quoted from XDA Developer, Thursday (9/12/2021).
The teaser also revealed that the camera has a sensor measuring 1/1.58 inch, a focal length equivalent to 50mm, and an aperture of f/2.4. Unfortunately Oppo did not share other technical details about this retractable camera.
It is not known what the main function of this retractable camera is. But most likely Oppo developed this technology in order to offer optical zoom capabilities in the main camera without the need to use an additional periscope or telephoto lens.
Most likely Oppo will provide more information about this camera technology at the Oppo INNO Day event that will take place on December 14, 2021.
Oppo is not the first mobile phone vendor to develop retractable camera technology. Last year, Xiaomi once showcased Retractable Wide-Aperture Lens Technology, but unfortunately until now it has not been a product released to the public.
