Netizens in China were in an uproar because there was news that Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi, had left the company. Is that right?
Many netizens are wondering about it because Lei Jun is said to have resigned from the chairman position at Beijing Xiaomi Electronic Products Co Ltd. They thought this meant that Lei Jun stopped completely.
The excitement on social media reached the ears of Xiaomi officials. Finally, Xiaomi's general manager of PR explained that it was not true that Lei Jun wanted to leave the company.
He just quit as chairman of the Xiaomi electronics unit. Xiaomi has many subsidiaries so this kind of resignation is a natural thing. Moreover, Lei Jun is also focusing on developing Xiaomi's electric car business.
"Not only netizens, many media have called Lei Jun resigned as chairman of Xiaomi," said the PR while explaining that Xiaomi has various businesses, as quoted by us from Gizmo China.
Lei Jun himself then also clarified on his social media account. "Xiaomi Group has many subsidiaries, so the adjustment of the Board of Directors and the legality of the various subsidiaries is normal, don't get me wrong," wrote Lei Jun.
Lei Jun himself is ambitious to make a reliable electric car made by Xiaomi and currently, intensive preparations have been made. Xiaomi has officially established a company called Xiaomi Automobile which has been registered with the authorities in China.
Xiaomi plans to build an electric car factory that can produce 300 thousand units annually, when it is fully operational in 2024.
The factory will be built in Beijing in two stages. In addition, Xiaomi will also build the headquarters of its automotive unit, including the research and sales division office, in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone.
"I'm looking forward to seeing Xiaomi electric cars go through every street in the world. I personally lead the team, this will be the last major entrepreneurial project of my life. I know exactly what this decision means and I'm willing to risk my entire reputation fighting for Xiaomi." said Lei Jun.
