MediaTek shows off Kompanio 1380 for Chromebooks, here are the specifications

MediaTek showed off the Kompanio 1380, which is the chipset for premium Chromebooks. What are the specifications like?

The Kompanio 1380 isn't arguably the most advanced MediaTek chip, nor is there a 5G connection like in the Kompanio 1300T. But MediaTek is marketing it to OEMs like Acer, who will make premium-grade Chromebooks or Chrome OS tablets at affordable prices.

The chip is built using TSMC's 6nm process and has an octa-core CPU, consisting of four 3GHz Arm Cortex A-78 cores and four 2GHz Arm Cortex A-55 cores, as well as five Mali-G57 GPU cores.

This SoC can be paired with 2,133MHz LPDDR4X RAM. This combination allows the Kompanio 1380 to run two 4K 60Hz monitors, three 3K 30Hz monitors, or a 1440p 120Hz monitor.

The first device that will use this SoC is the Acer Chromebook Spin 513, whose prices start at USD 599. Acer targets the release of the Spin 513 in April for Europe and Asia, and June for Canada and the United States.

"Kompanio 1380 continues MediaTek's legacy as a chipmaker for Arm-based Chromebooks, enhancing the premium Chromebook experience with next-level performance and extra-long battery life," said PC Tseng, General Manager of Intellegient Multimedia Business Unit at MediaTek. .

MediaTek itself is currently exploring the realm of flagship phones through the Dimensity 9000 SoC, which is said to have faster performance than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

When tested on Geekbench 5, Dimensity 9000 is faster than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Exynos 2200, both single-core and multi-core.

In the leak, Dimensity got a score of 1278 for single-core and 4410 for multi-core. While the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 scores 1231 and 3752, and the Exynos 2200 scores 1109 and 3534, for single-core and multi-core, respectively.

Although on the GPU side, the performance is a bit behind, but the Dimensity 9000 is said to have more efficient power consumption than its competitors. The Dimensity 9000 only loses to Apple's A15 Bionic, which has a single-core score of 1750 and a multi-core score of 4885.
