Apple has just posted record revenue for the first quarter of 2022. In a call with investors, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Apple CFO Luca Maestri also provided an update on the number of active Apple devices.
Throughout 2021, Apple noted that there were 150 million new active devices worldwide. In total, to date the number of active Apple devices worldwide has reached 1.8 billion units.
This number represents an increase from the 1.65 billion Apple reported in January 2021, and the 1.5 billion active devices reported in January 2020, as quoted from The Verge, Sunday (30/1/2022).
Apple classifies active devices as those that have been connected to Apple services in the last 90 days. Some of the devices included include iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV.
While Cook didn't go into detail about the number of individual devices, Apple previously reported there were one billion active iPhones worldwide last year, after selling one billion iPhones in 2016 and having 900 million active iPhone users in 2019.
With its latest achievement, this year Apple only needs another 200 million devices before it hits the two billion active device mark.
It is quite interesting to compare Apple's achievements with its two big competitors. Last year Google announced there were three billion active Android devices worldwide. This figure is likely to be higher if it includes Android devices that use third-party app stores.
Recently, Microsoft announced that there are 1.4 billion active Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. Microsoft also counts Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S as Windows 10 devices.
Apple itself recorded revenue of USD 123.9 billion in Q1 2022 between October-December 2021. That figure was 11% higher than their revenue in the same period in the previous year, which was USD 111.4 billion.
iPhone is of course the biggest contributor thanks to high demand during the holiday season, and contributed revenue of USD 71.63 billion. The Cupertino, California-based company also posted a record profit of USD 34.6 billion.
