Instagram has just released three new security features in Indonesia to celebrate World Safe Internet Day. One of them is the 'Take a Break' feature to remind users to take a break from social media.
Instagram Asia Pacific Communications Manager Putri Silalahi said these new features were released to help teenage users maintain their security and wellbeing while surfing the internet.
Instagram understands that it is their responsibility to keep the user experience safe and comfortable on Instagram so that it can support their productivity, especially for teenage users, by continuing to innovate by presenting a series of features that help maintain their mental health and wellbeing.
The following is a list of Instagram features that teenage users can use to maintain their safety and comfort:
- Take a Break

The Take a Break feature was first released at the end of last year and is now officially available in Indonesia. After activating this feature, users who have been scrolling through Instagram for too long will receive a reminder to take a break.
This feature can be accessed on the Manage Time tab, just like the Daily Limit feature, which shows how much time a user has spent within the Instagram app. Here's how to enable Take a Break on Instagram:
Open the Instagram app
Go to your profile
Tap the three horizontal lines icon in the top right corner of your profile
Select your Activity menu, then go to the Time tab
Select the option Set Reminder for Break
You can choose reminders to take breaks for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and 30 minutes
Tap Done to activate the selected reminder time
- Limit (Limit)
To protect teen users from bullying and hurtful comments, Instagram also has a Limit feature. With this feature, users can hide comments or DMs from accounts that don't follow their accounts.
- hidden words
This feature will automatically filter incoming DM requests that contain words, sentences, and emojis that indicate hate speech. This feature focuses on DM requests because Instagram data shows DM requests are a place where users often receive messages containing hate speech.
- Block
As the name implies, this feature certainly allows users to block someone's account or new accounts they may create first. With this feature, annoying accounts will have a hard time contacting users because their new accounts have also been blocked.
To activate the three features above, do the following:
Open the Instagram app
Go to your profile
Tap the three horizontal lines icon in the top right corner of the profile
Select the Settings menu then select the Privacy option
You can choose privacy settings from Limits, Hidden Words, and Blocks on this page, then follow the instructions for each feature to activate it.
In addition to the features above, Instagram also has a new initiative, namely to make new accounts of users under the age of 16 become private accounts. Instagram also prevents adults with suspicious activity from following or interacting with teens' accounts in Explore or the comments section.
Wherever and whenever, Instagram continues to strive to protect teen users on Instagram from adults they don't know. We believe that making accounts private is the right step to protect teenage users from unwanted interactions when joining Instagram.
