Google released its first developer preview version of Android 13, which confirmed that the codename for the OS was: Tiramisu.
The code was found by 9to5Google on the Android 13 developer preview version, precisely in the 'About phone' menu. The name of this Italian dessert has actually been around since July 2021.
Tiramisu, which is a typical Italian coffee-flavored dessert, was born because it is a very popular food name, more popular than other desserts whose names start with the letter 'T'.
But keep in mind, this Tiramisu name seems to remain code, while the official name of the OS will still be Android 13. In accordance with the naming scheme set by Google since they released Android 10.
Since the name was changed to Android 10, the dessert name has only been used as an internal code name for the OS. Such as Android 10 whose code name is Quince Tart, Android 11 with the code Red Velvet Cake, and Android 12 which is named Snow Cone.
However, they have discontinued this naming scheme since Android 10, which was done because it was difficult to find dessert names with an easy-to-pronounce 'Q'. Since then Android only uses numbers to indicate the version.
Google considers Android naming unusual or even difficult to pronounce in some countries, including in countries with a large number of Android users such as India and Brazil.
The use of dessert names in English, according to Android VP of product management Sameer Samat, will distance Android's image from users in certain countries. In fact, the previous Android name was often difficult to pronounce by users who came from certain regions.
Now, after confirming the name of Android 13, now we can guess the name for Android 14, which should start with the letter 'U'. Unusual indeed, and most of the names of sweet desserts that begin with this letter are very rarely heard.
For example Ustipci, which is a typical Southeast European dessert, or Otap (often also called Utap), which is a typical Filipino dessert. What do you think is the right name for Android 14?
