PS5 Lack of Sales Makes Sony's Revenue Down

Sony managed to sell 17.3 million PS5 units in 2021. Even so, the number is still inferior to the PS4. Compared to its predecessor, the PS5 still does not sell well and is the cause of Sony's decline in revenue.

"It was reported that the decline in revenue for Sony games and its Network Services, experienced a decline in revenue in the quarter ending December 31, 2021. The main reason was the relatively low sales of the PS5," said Daniel Ahmad, Senior Analyst at Niko Partners, in a social media post. .

When compared to the PS4, the numbers have a considerable difference in the number of approximately three million units from the 20.2 million units sold. The main trigger is none other than the scarcity of components and this problem is still being experienced today.

Quoted from the Video Games Chronicle, Saturday (5/2/2022), based on the data presented by Ahmad, sales in Q4 2021, PS5 was only able to collect purchases of 3.9 million units, a decrease in the same quarter in 2020, namely 4.5 million units.

Meanwhile, it was previously reported that Sony will stop development of the PS4. But apparently, Sony changed its mind and plans to keep making the console until 2022. This aims to overcome the shortage of PS5 stock and fill the gap with PS4 stock.

"This (PS4) is one of the best-selling consoles ever and there will always be crossover between generations," said a Sony spokesperson.

Sony is known to choose to develop more PS4, because the components are now available. In addition, PS4 is also easier to produce and can be an alternative at an affordable price for sure.

As for producing the PS5, they were unable to meet the high demand due to the global chip crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, the crisis has shown no sign of ending and is still affecting various sectors including technology.
