Twitter is one of the platforms used by netizens to express opinions and ideas in real time. Here are tips to help users feel more secure and comfortable participating in conversations on Twitter.
1. Keep your Twitter account secure by enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) to add an extra layer of protection. This will help ensure that only the account owner can access the account.
2. Twitter recently launched a feature that gives account owners more control over who can follow them. If users want to restrict their account, they can now remove followers without having to block them (available on Twitter.com).
3. Twitter allows users to restrict Tweets from certain accounts without unfollowing them or blocking them by muting those accounts. Users can also use the advanced mute feature to mute Tweets that contain specific words, phrases, usernames, emojis or hashtags. Muting will remove this Tweet from the Notifications tab, push notifications, SMS, email notifications, home timeline, and replies to Tweets.
4. Sharing location information that can identify your home, work address, or even where your children go to school should be avoided.
5. Direct Message allows users to have private conversations or create group conversations, but sometimes people receive unwanted DMs. DM settings allow users to filter out unwanted messages and restrict messages from people they don't follow. If the setting is turned off, users will only receive messages from people they follow. Users can also enable quality filters to make exceptions for low-quality or potentially spammy DMs.
6. Twitter is indeed a place for self-expression, but if you find your personal information, photos or videos being used without consent, report it immediately.
