Ukraine asks hackers to unite to ward off Russian attack

The Ukrainian government asked for help from hackers in its country, in order to jointly protect important infrastructure there that was attacked by Russian hackers. In addition, to carry out spy missions through cyberspace.

"Ukrainian cyber community, it's time to get involved in the cyber defense of our country," wrote a post from a local hacker forum.

Those who are willing are asked to register via the Google docs application and write down what their expertise is. The post was written by Yegor Aushev, a Ukrainian security expert, at the request of the Ministry of Defence.

Aushev is the founder of the company Cyber Unit Technologies, which often helps the Ukrainian government protect critical sectors from cyber attacks.

He said that the hackers who volunteered would enter the cyber defense unit and attack division. The defense division will protect critical facilities such as power plants and clean water systems.

Then the unit assigned to carry out the attack will help the Russian military carry out reconnaissance operations on the Russian army. Ukraine itself does not yet have a special cyber unit in its military.

"There are foreign soldiers who are in our country. We need to know what they are doing," Aushev said, quoted by Reuters on Friday (25/2/2022).

Russia itself reportedly launched a massive cyber attack in conjunction with a military attack on Ukraine. Russian hackers have regularly attacked Ukraine. In 2015, a cyber attack thought to have originated in Russia disrupted a power plant and left 225,000 people out of power.

On the other hand, help has come from the well-known hacker group, Anonymous. "Anonymous is currently involved in an operation against the Russian Federation. Our operation is targeting the Russian government. It is possible that the private sector will also be affected," wrote the account @YourAnonNews which has 6.4 million followers.
