Elon Musk has less flashy reputation in the world of charity where he is said to have just donated a small amount of his wealth. However, it turns out that the SpaceX and Tesla boss last year was among the largest philanthropic donors in the United States.
Data from the US Securities and Exchange Commission reveals that the man born in South Africa donated about 5 million Tesla shares, which are worth USD 5.7 billion.
The recipient of the funds was not identified or mysterious, but it was confirmed to be for charity. The amount of USD 5.7 billion makes Musk the second largest donor in Uncle Sam's country.
As quoted by us from CNN, Elon Musk only lost to Bill Gates and his ex-wife, Melinda. Through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, last year they recorded donations worth USD 15 billion, according to data from the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Last year, Elon Musk, who is the richest person in the world, was challenged by the director of the UN World Food Program (WFP) to make a donation to tackle the hunger that plagues some of the world's citizens.
At that time, Musk responded. "If WFP could clearly describe how $6 billion could solve world hunger, I'd sell Tesla's current stock and do it," Musk tweeted. However, it is unclear whether his $5.7 billion donation is related to the pledge.
"There are millions of people around the world who are on the brink of starvation. Whether WFP accepts the money remains to be seen, but I'm pleased to hear that Elon Musk is involved. This is a good first step," said David Beasley, Executive Director of WFP.
