Wow, Wall Street Journal Owner Attacked by Chinese Hackers

News Corp, the media company that owns The Wall Street Journal, claimed to be the victim of a cyber attack in January 2022.

This was revealed in a report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Mandiant, the security consulting firm that investigated the report, said the cyberattack was aimed at gathering information for the Chinese government, said David Wong, VP of Mandiant.

News Corp. found the attack that occurred in January was directed to their cloud-based system, they called the attack in the form of 'persistent cyberattack activity'.

In the initial analysis, it was stated that this cyber attack was linked by a foreign government, and that data was stolen in the attack, as quoted from The Verge, Sunday (6/2/2022).

But they said the stolen data was not financial data and consumer funds. One of the stolen data is documents belonging to their journalists.

In addition to the Wall Street Journal, News Corp. is the owner of the New York Post and Dow Jones. However, they did not reveal how many employee data were affected by this cyber attack.

Previously, the Wall Street Journal had also been the target of attacks by Chinese hackers, namely in January 2013. At that time a cyber attack that infiltrated their computer system was said to have occurred to monitor Wall Street Journal journalists who served in China.

The same thing also happened at almost the same time, namely in January 2013, to the New York Times, whose computer network was infiltrated by Chinese hackers.
