Nowadays it is very easy to create and upload videos on the YouTube platform. This makes it easier for irresponsible users to spread video content that contains misinformation or hoaxes.
YouTube also has certain policies to prevent videos from extremists. However, certain types of videos are considered sensitive and still fall within the limits of their policy. Thus, the video cannot be said to violate the policy so the video will continue to be displayed.
According to Ubergizmo, YouTube tries to limit the content of such videos by hiding them and not recommending them. Despite the fact that users can still share and embed on other sites or social media.
This is what prompted YouTube to remove the option to share and embed videos, so that the video cannot be shared on platforms outside of YouTube.
YouTube admits, this step may be too drastic. But YouTube tries to prevent sharing too far in limiting the freedom of the viewer.
"Our system reduces limit content in recommendations, but sharing a link is an active choice one can make, as opposed to a more passive action like watching a recommended video," YouTube said in a blog post.
YouTube also acknowledges that videos like this may be useful for research or news reporting and the like.
"We need to be careful to balance limiting the spread of potentially harmful misinformation, while leaving room for discussion or education on controversial and sensitive topics," YouTube said.
YouTube has not yet made any decision. But keep in mind that misinformation is clearly a problem that big platforms like YouTube need to address.
