After M1 - M1 Max, Now Apple Has M1 Ultra

Apple adds to the length of the Apple Silicon line for Mac through the M1 Ultra, accompanying the previously released M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max.

This system on a chip (SoC) - as can be seen from the name - is certainly much faster than the previous M1 variant. In fact, its dimensions are much larger than the M1 Max -- whose dimensions are already four times that of the M1.

M1 Ultra is a combination of two M1 Max, which are united using an architecture called UltraFusion. UltraFusion has a data path of 2.5TB/s, which Apple says is absolutely necessary to maximize the performance of the M1 Ultra.

This architecture allows Apple to create a SoC whose specifications are twice as fast as the M1 Max. Such as a 20-core CPU, consisting of 16 fast cores and four efficient cores, a 64-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine.

"By connecting two M1 Max cores using the UltraFusion architecture, we were able to scale Apple silicon to an unprecedented new level," said Johny Srouji, SVP Hardware Technologies at Apple. .

"With a very powerful CPU, massive GPU, powerful Neural Engine, ProRes hardware acceleration, and large capacity unified memory, the Mi 1 Ultra completes the M1 family as the most capable and powerful chip for personal computers," he claims.

Then the RAM capacity also penetrates 128GB. This combination according to Apple makes the M1 Ultra eight times faster than the M1. Of course this claim is not equipped with a clear standard of unit comparison. As Apple has always done before.

The performance comparison claim is of course not only on the M1 chip, but comparisons to other chips, for example the Intel Core i9-12900K with DDR5 RAM for CPU performance comparisons, and Nvidia Geforce RTX 3090 for GPU performance comparisons.

For example, CPU performance is better than a 16-core processor for desktop PCs with 100W more efficient power consumption. Then the GPU performance is equivalent to the highest discrete GPU with 200W less power consumption.

The M1 Ultra is used in a new device called Mac Studio, which looks like a bunch of Mac Minis stacked up.
