Apple Needs Samsung's Help To Get Rid Of The iPhone's Notch

Apple has long been rumored to be eliminating the notch on the iPhone, but so far that hasn't happened either. One cause? Face ID.

The notch on the iPhone is currently used to store a number of sensors, one of which is the infrared sensor for Face ID. That's what makes these bangs difficult to remove from the iPhone.

Well, The Elec says that Samsung has technology that is being developed, which can make Face ID and the front camera work from below the screen. So it's not just a camera that can be hidden under the screen.

This new technology will reportedly only be used in Samsung's line of folding screen phones from 2023, and may be used by Apple for the iPhone 15 line, as quoted by Techspot.

Samsung is currently using a camera below the screen on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, the quality of the screen above the camera is quite a complaint in a number of reviews, due to its low pixel density. This needs to be done so that the screen can pass as much light as possible to be recorded by the camera sensor.

Then the image also needs to be processed further from the software side, which sometimes makes it look unrealistic. But this is a first-generation under-display camera, and Samsung has reportedly found a way to fix the problem.

The quality improvement is reportedly carried out in collaboration with OTI Lumionics, a Canadian transparent screen maker. The company uses machine learning technology, and over the last few years has continued to research and refine screen manufacturing methods. They are said to be able to make microscopic transparent "windows" in the form of cathodes in OLED display panels.

Apple was previously said to be collaborating with LG Display to hide Face ID under the screen, because Samsung's rival is also developing a similar technology. Based on the original plan, LG is targeting to achieve 20% translucent screens by 2023 and 40% by 2024
