In early March, Counterpoint Research revealed that seven of the top 10 best-selling phones in the world are iPhones, and now they're revealing other facts about expensive phones.
According to the market research firm, the market for expensive mobile phones with prices above USD 400 grew 24% during 2021 compared to 2020. Even though in the same period, the overall mobile phone market growth was only 7%.
According to Tarun Pathak, director of Counterpoint, the high-priced mobile phone market that will grow during 2021 is due to several factors. Such as the consumer mobile phone turnover cycle, corporate strategy, and even the dynamics of the component supply chain.
But not only that, Pathak also sees an increasing demand for 5G connectivity. There are also gaps left by Huawei, which Apple later filled, especially in the Chinese and Western European markets.
Other companies that are also scrambling to fill the gap include Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, as quoted from Phone Arena.
As previously reported, Counterpoint Research revealed a list of the top 10 best-selling phones in 2021. Interestingly, seven of the 10 phones on this list are iPhones.
According to Counterpoint data, there were 4,200 active phone models available in the global market last year. The top 10 best-selling phones on this list account for 19% of total global mobile phone sales in 2021
The title of best-selling cell phone of 2021 went to the iPhone 12, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 11. The top three iPhone models accounted for 41% of Apple's total sales in 2021.
Even though it was launched in 2020, Counterpoint revealed several reasons why the iPhone 12 is still selling well in 2021. One of them is the presence of the long-awaited 5G network and the slightly late launch of the iPhone 12 which makes it still sought after.
Meanwhile, there are only two other mobile phone vendors that made it onto this list, namely Samsung and Xiaomi. Interestingly, the Samsung and Xiaomi phones on this list come from the entry level class.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is at number six. While the Xiaomi Redmi 9A and Redmi 9 are in the 7th and 10th positions respectively.
