Samsung was caught throttling (slowing down performance) more than 10 thousand applications, and this has resulted in a number of their flagship phones being kicked from Geekbench.
The culprit for this throttling is the Game Optimizing Service (GOS) application on Samsung phones. Supposedly, this application function is to set game applications so that the phone does not overheat or overheat.
But in reality, GOS actually limits performance in many popular non-gaming applications, such as Microsoft Office and Zoom. Interestingly, GOS does not limit performance in benchmark applications such as 3DMark and Geekbench, aka these applications can run with full performance from the system on a chip used.
Even worse, in the One UI 4.0 update, Samsung is said to be making it difficult for users who want to disable the GOS application, as quoted by us from Phone Arena, Tuesday (8/3/2022).
Well, Geekbench does not accept this GOS behavior, which they consider as a form of manipulation of benchmark results. As a result, they removed a number of Samsung's flagship phones from the platform, namely the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, Galaxy S20, and Galaxy S10, all of which were found to be using GOS.
Samsung has actually clarified about this GOS, and said this application only optimizes CPU and GPU performance to avoid overheating when the phone is used to play games for a long time.
The South Korean company also promised to update GOS, where users can choose to turn on or turn off GOS.
This kind of behavior is actually not the first time. Geekbench once removed the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro from its platform because of the same thing. Then in 2017 Apple was also caught slowing down the performance of an old-school iPhone with a shrinking battery capacity.
