Intel and AMD agree to stop supplying chips to Russia

In order to comply with the embargo imposed on Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine, Intel and AMD are said to have stopped supplying their chips to the country.

Reported by Techspot, Tuesday (1/3/2022), AMD and Intel are said to have informed their partners in Russia that they would stop supplying industrial grade chips to the Red Bear Country.

Even so, the supply of chips for the consumer class such as laptop and desktop processors is said to be unaffected by this restriction.

"The company continues to monitor the situation and will enforce the applicable sanctions and export control rules, including the new sanctions imposed by OFAC and the rules issued by the BIS," said a spokesman for Intel in Russia.

Blocking the supply of these chips will only start on March 3. However AMD and Intel have verbally notified the supply stop, and canceled all shipments of processors.

The sanctions are expected to lead to a shortage of components for servers and sophisticated equipment in various industries, including aviation, banking and others.

For institutions and companies in Russia that are affected, this blocking will certainly be detrimental. Especially for those who rely on foreign chip designs to run their critical systems.

In fact, Russia has announced its intention to produce its own components so that it does not depend on the supply of foreign companies. However, this intention has not been realized. The CPU called Elbrus-8C that they recently designed failed to pass the stress test they did.

On the other hand, stopping the supply of these chips may in the future also weaken Russia's cyber warfare capabilities, which were said to have been active in carrying out cyber attacks during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Apart from AMD and Intel, many other technology companies have blocked the presence of their products in Russia, or indeed their services have been blocked by the Russian government. Examples are Meta, Google and Twitter, which recently blocked the Kremlin's media accounts from being able to generate revenue from advertising and monetizing their content.
