Jeff Bezos' ex-wife, Mackenzie Scott, announced that she had donated more than $3.8 billion to 465 organizations. This donation was made within the last nine months.
In his blog post on Medium, Scott said his donation goes to various nonprofits. But he stressed that his team is focused on supporting organizations that help under-represented voices.
"Our team's focus over the past nine months has covered several new areas, but as always, our goal is to support the needs of underrepresented people from all groups," Mackenzie wrote. ).
Recently, Scott made his biggest donation of USD 436 million to Habitat for Humanity, and USD 133.5 million to the educational organization Communities in School.
Compared to other billionaire philanthropists, Scott has a slightly different approach in that he often disburses billions of dollars in sudden donations. Based on Forbes data, so far Scott has donated more than USD 12 billion in four stages.
Scott became one of the richest women in the world after divorcing from Bezos in 2019. At that time Bezos was the richest person in the world, and now the Amazon founder has dropped to second place behind Elon Musk.
From the divorce deal, Scott gets a 4% stake in Amazon. His current net worth is estimated at USD 55 billion based on data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
In 2019, Scott joined The Giving Pledge and committed to donating half of his fortune to a charitable foundation. The Giving Pledge is a commitment started by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates in 2010 to encourage the world's billionaires to share their wealth with those in need.
After divorcing Jeff Bezos, Mackenzie Scott married Dan Jewett, a science teacher from Seattle. In March last year, Jewett followed in his wife's footsteps and joined The Giving Pledge.
