Nintendo disabled their eShop in Russia, which prevented Nintendo Switch users in that country from buying digital games.
Reported by The Verge, Monday (7/3/2022), the Nintendo eShop in Russia is in maintenance mode, which occurs because the payment system used by the Nintendo eShop has stopped transactions in rubles (Russian currency).
"Since the payment service used in the Nintendo eShop has stopped processing payments in rubles, the Nintendo eShop is currently in maintenance mode," Nintendo wrote on its Russian-language website.
"We apologize for the inconvenience caused," they continued.
It is not yet known what payment service Nintendo uses in the Russian version of the eShop. However, currently many companies are boycotting Russia by stopping their service presence in Russia after they invaded Ukraine.
However, from the statement on the Nintendo eShop Russia site, it seems that Nintendo did not participate in the boycott of Russia, but was forced to because its service was hampered by other payment services.
So far there have been many game companies protesting the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Like EA and CD Projekt Red, which stopped selling all their games in Russia and Belarus.
Then Microsoft stopped all sales of its products and services in Russia, including Xbox, both software and hardware. Then Sony also pulled Gran Turismo 7 -- their newly released flagship game -- from Russia.
In addition, there are Apple and Samsung, both of which have stopped selling their products in Russia. TikTok has now stopped new content, be it videos or live streaming from Russia.
