Russian Invasion, Ukrainian Citizens Download Signal Instead of WhatsApp

Facing a difficult situation in the midst of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainians are still trying to communicate, one of them is by hunting down the Signal application.

Signal, which is an instant messaging application, offers end-to-end encrypted messages which is claimed to be better than WhatsApp.

This surge in use of Signal coincided with Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Currently, the war between Russia and Ukraine is still raging.

This fact is known in the tweet of Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, an internet infrastructure company related to the unique information that goes on behind the internet.

"Surge in use of Signal (messaging app) in Ukraine in the last 24 hours. Smaller, but significant increase in Telegram usage as well," Prince said.

Meanwhile, the WhatsApp application, which is marked with a red line, does not appear to have changed at all compared to Signal or Telegram, which are the most widely used in Ukraine.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has entered its fifth day. The Ukrainian military said the Red Bear forces were starting to slow down their offensive, but were still fighting in an attempt to take control of some parts of Ukraine.

Signal was founded by one of the former WhatsApp founders, Brian Acton. Armed with experience and strategies launched by Acton, Signal has now competed with WhatsApp and Telegram.

Signal's popularity has skyrocketed since its launch in 2014. Signal has become the messaging app of choice for users looking for additional privacy that other apps like WhatsApp don't provide.

Signal also provides its services for free and does not advertise like Telegram. To support its operations, Signal recently launched a donation program that relies on donations from users.

Unfortunately, Signal has just been abandoned by Moxie Marlinspike who is also the founder of the service. The position of CEO of the company is now temporarily filled by Brian Acton.
