Russia's invasion of Ukraine which began on Thursday (24/2) is still ongoing today. The attacks launched by Russia on Ukraine had many impacts, one of which was that many Ukrainians were forced to flee and seek refuge in neighboring countries that were considered safer.
Recently, actor who starred in Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch offered his home to Ukrainian refugees amid the ongoing Russian offensive.
Cumberbatch said he wanted to get involved in Homes for Ukraine, a program from the British government that allows Britons to accept Ukrainian refugees, as quoted by The Guardian. Each house hosting Ukrainian refugees for 6 months will receive £350 per month from the government.
He expressed his desire for Cumberbatch when he was present on the red carpet for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) at Albert Hall, London, England. He also showed his support for Ukraine by wearing the yellow and blue badges which are the colors of the country's flag.
"We all need to do more than just wear badges. We need to donate, we need to put pressure on our politicians to keep creating a kind of paradise here for people who are suffering," he told Sky News.
He added, "Everyone needs to do as much as they can. There is a record number of people voluntarily bringing people into their homes, I hope to be a part of that myself."
This is not the first time Cumberbatch has shown support for Ukraine. Previously, he raised the Ukrainian flag at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in solidarity with a country that is being attacked by Russia.
According to The Independent, most of the refugees fleeing Ukraine are women and children, as men aged 18-60 have to stay behind to fight and are barred from leaving the country. Many Ukrainians have moved to other countries in Europe, mostly to live with friends and family there.
More than 1.5 million refugees have arrived in Poland since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, out of a total of about 2.7 million people the United Nations says have fled so far.
