Spotify announced it was pulling out of Russia on Friday (03/25/2022). This Swedish music streaming app will completely discontinue their service in Red Bear Country.
The decision was taken because of new rules in Russia that limit free speech. It is feared that Spotify will pose a risk to its employees and listeners.
The new law, passed by the Russian government, will criminalize those who share information about Russia's operations in Ukraine, which the government considers false information.
Spotify itself is known as a music player, but also hosts and distributes various podcasts including political content. So don't be surprised if the new law will have an impact on its services.
Spotify has previously discontinued offering premium subscriptions in Russia but the free service is still available. It said Spotify earlier this month it would close its Russia office and remove all Russian state media content.
"Spotify continues to believe that it is very important to try to keep our services operational in Russia in order to provide reliable and independent news and information in the region." a Spotify spokesperson said in a statement.
"Unfortunately, recently enacted laws further restrict access to information, deprive freedom of expression, and criminalize certain types of news putting the safety of Spotify employees and perhaps even our listeners at risk."
Other technology companies including Apple and Google have stepped back and stopped offering products and services in Russia. Several banks and retail brands such as McDonald's and Starbucks have also stopped operating in the country after invading Ukraine last month.
Companies that continue to operate in the country face challenges including limited payment services, logistical challenges, and the weak value of the Russian Ruble.
But Spotify's decision is based more on Russia's crackdown on news and other media that could negatively impact the Russian war.
