The Story of Voice of Baceprot Female Metal Band Garut Faces Cyber Bullying

Metal bands are generally fronted by men's ranks, but that doesn't mean women can't pursue this path, you know! The metal trio Voice of Baceprot (VoB), which is echoed by women in hijab, shared their stories of struggling to move forward even though some people gave hate comments on social media.

In the 'Virtual Press Briefing #YukBukaSuara with Google', Monday (7/2/2022), Firdda Marsya Kurnia, who provided vocals and guitar at VoB, told the story of their struggle. Social media, especially YouTube, became their platform to introduce themselves to the public.

"Many say it's not suitable, it's better to just focus on the house. Although at first we weren't serious, but over time, we enjoyed a lot from music," said Marsya.

Marsya said that it seemed as if it was destiny for him, Widi Rahmawati (base) and Euis Siti Aisyah (drummer) to become musicians on the metal track. The reason is that none of their family members have a career in music. He also added that the stereotypes that often appear in metal are actually wrong. Metal does not have a bad influence, it is what the music conveys that determines the work.

"We intend to provide good things such as gender equality, we believe that music has its own language," he continued.

The problem of hate comments on social media, VoB revealed that they actually don't really expose their personal lives on social media. Usually, they only upload lyrics, music or other things that can also encourage the promotion of their band. But, there are still those who are nosy by writing hate speech.

"Sometimes I like to get carried away by seeing people (on social media - ed), so I often compare myself with other people and it makes me feel insecure. So, as much as possible, I share things that can be taken from the positive side," said Marsya.

"About hate comments, hate comments can't be denied, okay. Just let it go until you're tired and it will disappear. Haters will hate," he concluded.
