Android 13 Makes Android TV Save Quota and Electricity

Google usually releases a new version of Android TV about 1-2 months after the latest version of Android is released, and the latest version of Android TV will reportedly have a quota and electricity saver feature.

In 2021, Android TV 12 was released a month after Android 12 was available for Pixel phones. Now, even though Android TV 13 hasn't been released yet, a number of new features have spread, such as picture-in-picture (PiP) support and low power standby mode.

Actually, currently Android TV supports PiP mode, with a ratio of 1.777778:1 which is suitable for displaying 16:9 content. However, developers can actually create a PiP window with a ratio smaller than 1:2.39 or larger than 2.39:1 if needed.

As Mishaal Rahman discovered and explained on the Esper blog, Google is improving the capabilities of this PiP feature on Android TV 13, where developers can make the PiP window larger or smaller than before.

Then there is also overlay support, which allows users to install a PiP window above the main display, so that both windows can be seen clearly for the user.

Android TV 13 also has a new mode called low power standby. This feature will turn off various applications' ability to "wake up" the TV and prohibit applications from accessing the internet while this mode is active.

This means that with this mode, the television's power consumption will be smaller, while reducing internet data consumption, as quoted from Android Police, Tuesday (19/4/2022).

If Google follows the schedule for Android TV 12 last year, it means Android TV 13 is expected to appear in November. However, unlike mobile phones, where OS updates are relatively fast, OS updates for these TVs are usually quite time-consuming. It is possible that the new Android TV 13 will be available on user devices in early 2023.
