Galaxy S22 Ultra vs iPhone 13 Pro Max, Which is the Fastest 5G Phone?

5G network support is now one of the things to consider when choosing a flagship phone. Between the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which 5G phone has the fastest connection?

According to Ookla's network performance report, the phone with the fastest 5G performance in the first quarter of 2022 is the Galaxy S22 Ultra with a median download speed of 116.3 Mbps and a median upload speed of 14 Mbps.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra was trailed by the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with a median download speed of 100.8 Mbps and a median upload speed of 12.7 Mbps. Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is in third place with a median download speed of 99.5 Mbps and a median upload speed of 12.5 Mbps, as quoted from Tom's Guide, Tuesday (19/4/2022).

The position of the Galaxy S22 Ultra at the top is not surprising. This latest flagship phone from Samsung carries the Snapdragon X65 modem which is the fastest modem from Qualcomm.

Currently Qualcomm already has a Snapdragon X70 modem, but it is likely that phones using this modem will only be launched in the second half of 2022.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 series each uses a Snapdragon X65 modem, one generation below the Snapdragon X70 modem used by the Galaxy S22 series.

But the iPhone 14 will likely use the Snapdragon X65 modem so that it offers 5G performance on par with the Galaxy S22 series. Apple is said to be developing its own modem for future iPhones, but that might not be until 2023.

Ookla also ranks the best chipsets for 5G phones. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 which is the latest chipset from Qualcomm and used by the Galaxy S22 series is in the top position with a median download speed of 112.7 Mbps.

Interestingly, in the top five ranks there is the Tensor chipset made by Google that is used by the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. This chipset has an average download speed of 88.9 Mbps.
