Tens of Thousands of Tech Employees Leave Russia

Many workers in Russia's technology sector are reportedly leaving the country. They seek a more secure and decent living from their professional skills.

As quoted by us from the Associated Press, Tuesday (5/4/2022) it is estimated that around 70 thousand computer specialists, worried because of the unfriendly business and political climate, have left Russia since the invasion of Ukraine 5 weeks ago. It is estimated that many more will take similar steps.

"The first wave, between 50 and 70 thousand people, has already left," said Sergei Plugotarenko, head of the Russian Association of Electronic Communications.

Well, of course, the exodus of technology experts is a loss for the Russian side. While some countries seize it as an opportunity, where the employees may be able to contribute greatly.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is aware of the phenomenon, and has approved new rules to abolish income tax between this year and 2024 for individuals working in information technology companies.

Some of those who were exodus said they were not in a hurry to return home. Many of them moved to Poland, Latvia, to Lithuania.

Some headed to Armenia, Georgia and countries of the former Soviet Union where they did not need a visa. Anastasia, a computer systems analyst, moved to Kyrgyzstan where her husband has family there.

"When we heard about the war, we thought maybe it's time for us to go. On February 25, we already bought tickets and left Russia," he said.

"The more talent Europe and the United States take from Russia, the more benefit from technological innovations that may just emerge overseas," said Sinushin, Managing Partner at Untitled Ventures.
