iOS 16 will be released in the coming months. Just like in previous years, some older iPhones will not receive this latest operating system update.
When Apple released iOS 15 last year, all iPhones running iOS 14 could get the update. That's quite surprising considering there are several iPhones that are six years old. However, this year seems to be different.
Rumors from tipster LeaksApplePro say there will be three iPhones currently running iOS 15 but will not get the iOS 16 update. The three iPhones in question are the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and the first generation iPhone SE, as quoted from Tom's Guide, Saturday (30 /4/2022).
Apple does not provide the latest iOS updates for older iPhones because the hardware used is outdated and does not have the performance or sufficient storage space to run the latest version of the operating system.
As is known, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus were first launched in 2015, and the first generation iPhone SE was released in 2016. All three come with the A9 chipset, whose performance is certainly already behind the A13 used by the iPhone 13.
Given that these three are the last iPhones to carry a 3.5mm headphone jack, of course, this is the strongest indication of how old these phones are.
When they were first launched, all three were running iOS 9, so the six iOS updates that have been obtained over the last 6-7 years have certainly exceeded expectations. Especially when compared to the updates that Android phones receive which are usually only given for 2-3 years.
But these are all just rumors that have not been confirmed directly by Apple. Even so, LeaksApplePro's track record so far is quite accurate.
As for the new features in iOS 16, LeaksApplePro says this new generation of iOS will bring larger interactive widgets, quick actions shortcuts, and improvements to the Files and Reminders apps.
iOS 16 will likely debut at the WWDC 2022 event in June, alongside macOS 13 and other Apple software updates. Previously, iPhone users would still receive iOS 15.5, which is currently still in the beta testing phase.
