Tech companies are busy using the metaverse for various purposes, including making the metaverse a place for humans to live forever.
That's what Somnium Space, a Czech virtual reality company, is currently developing. Somnium Space CEO Artur Sychov said after losing his father to cancer a few years ago, he started looking for ways to maintain one's personality even after death.
The result is the 'Live Forever' mode that will be offered by Somnium Space. This mode allows the user to come back to life as a digital avatar, complete with his original physical appearance, voice, and personality.
To make this ambitious dream a reality, Somnium Space will seek permission from users to collect large amounts of their personal data, including their conversations, movements and facial expressions.
"If I died and had collected this data ... my children, they could come and they could have a conversation with my avatar, with my gestures, with my voice," Sychov said, as quoted by Cnet, Saturday (16/16). /4/2022).
"You will meet someone. And you will, maybe in the first 10 minutes of talking to that person, you will not realize that it's actually AI. That's the target," he added.
Somnium Space now has a service that allows users to purchase digital land assets and then purchase, build, or import homes, property, and other NFTs. Their service is built on the ethereum blockchain and can be accessed via VR headsets like Vive and Oculus.
But according to Sychov, the metaverse has far greater potential than just buying and selling digital assets. "They think it's about selling the NFT and the brand selling the stuff, but this (metaverse) isn't about that," Sychov said.
Somnium Space will start scanning interested users this year and roll out its first-generation 'Live Forever' avatar next year. Users will be scanned using virtual reality technology that can record how their fingers, mouth, eyes and body move.
To get started, Somnium Space will record the user's voice and movements. After that, they will collect massive amounts of data, it can even reach 100-300 times greater than the data collected when using mobile phones.
As artificial intelligence becomes more sophisticated, the resemblance of a user's digital avatar in the metaverse will continue to increase even after their death. Users are still given the option to stop data recording or ask Somnium Space to delete all their data.
Despite the huge amount of data collected, Sychov said users need not worry about being spied on by Somnium Space. The reason is that Somnium Space does not sell user data to advertisers, unlike Facebook or Apple's businesses.
"We don't want to know your names. We don't care who you are," said Sychov.
