TikTok Trial Dislike Button for Comments

TikTok is testing a dislike button for comments. This button is intended to help users flag comments they find irrelevant or inappropriate.

This dislike button is private, meaning that the comment uploader will not know if other users don't like the comment. Commenters and other users also can't see how many dislikes a comment receives.

Tiktok says this button is a way for users to flag comments that are considered spam or irrelevant to the context of the video. The app from Bytedance says the dislike button is not meant for reporting comments, and users should use existing procedures to report inappropriate comments.

"We started testing ways to make it easier for individuals to identify comments they deem irrelevant and inappropriate," TikTok said in a blog post, as quoted by TechCrunch, Thursday (14/4/2022).

"This community feedback will add to the various factors we've been using to help keep comments relevant and a place for real engagement."

Several TikTok users who were selected to take part in this trial have uploaded a dislike button display for comments. From several screenshots uploaded on Twitter, the dislike button is in the form of a thumbs down emoji and is next to the heart icon to like comments.

Unlike the heart icon, there is no number indicating the number of dislikes next to the thumb icon. The feature is currently being piloted in select countries, but it's not yet known when this feature will be widely rolled out.

In addition to the dislike button, TikTok has also started experimenting with reminders that will guide users towards options for filtering, blocking, and bulk deleting comments. This reminder will appear when a user receives a lot of negative comments on his video.
