Meta is reportedly set to launch its first augmented reality (AR) headset in 2024. This device also carries Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's big ambitions to develop the metaverse.
The Verge report, citing anonymous sources, said Meta developed the AR headset as part of the Project Nazare initiative. Reportedly, Meta has poured billions of dollars to develop this futuristic device.
Currently, Meta employees are still hard at work preparing the first generation of AR headsets for launch in 2026. They are also already working on lighter and more advanced second generation headsets for release in 2026, followed by third generation devices in 2028.
Meta's first AR headsets will be able to operate without being connected to a cellphone, but will still require a 'phone-shaped device' to perform the computing process and rely on a special wristband for control.
This first model will be based on Android and can offer a full AR experience with 3D visuals, eye tracking, rear camera, stereo audio, wide viewing angles, and a less flashy design.
The main feature of this headset is the ability to communicate with other people's holograms. When announcing the company's rebranding last year, Zuckerberg said this would provide a richer experience than traditional video calls.
Zuckerberg also set big ambitions for this futuristic device. A former Meta employee says Zuckerberg wants AR headsets to become Meta's 'iPhone moment', where a device can shake up the industry and change the company's image.
But Meta and Zuckerberg still have a long way to go to realize their ambitions. Although it will be launched in the near future, Meta reportedly still does not have a working and usable prototype.
The prototype is also still not perfect. Despite using advanced technologies such as MicroLED projectors and waveguide technology, this device is four times heavier than ordinary glasses and the battery only lasts for four hours, as quoted from Engadget, Thursday (14/4/2022).
In addition to AR headsets, Meta also plans to launch smart glasses called Hypernova that can connect to cellphones and display notifications via a small screen. This device will also debut in 2024.
Because it's still a first-generation product, Meta reportedly doesn't set a grandiose sales target. They will probably only sell tens of thousands of units to fans and developers.
