Science often uncovers the mysterious side of things. However, there are still a number of things that remain a secret and science has not been able to solve 100%. Examples are even close to us or what we often do every day.
The following are three things that cannot be explained scientifically as written by IFL Science, Wednesday (18/5/2022).
1. Yawn
You may have heard that yawning occurs because the body needs more oxygen in the blood. However, this idea was disproved in 1987.
Modern ideas suggest that yawning is done to cool the brain in preparation for sleep, but there are many other theories. One of them when humans face difficult situations.
"People who sky-dive say they tend to yawn before jumping. Police officers say they yawn before entering a difficult situation," Adrian Guggisberg, a professor of clinical neuroscience at Geneva University, told the New York Times.
However, it is possible that yawning has no physical effect at all, another theory says that yawning is a psychosocial phenomenon.
2. Ride a bike hands off
"If you ride a bicycle, and you hold it with your hand and then let go, it will fall, right? But there's actually a speed at which it won't fall," said Jason Moore, assistant professor of biomechanical engineering at the University of Technology Delft, in the Netherlands.
Depending on which expert you ask, everyone has their own answer about riding a bike hands off and not falling. A physicist might talk about the gyroscopic effects of a wheel, an engineer might apply it to the materials or geometry of a bicycle, while a biomechanicist might talk about proper rider posture and position. However, the problem is that you may not pay attention to all of these things and the bike will remain stable while hands off.
3. Why do humans have buttocks?
"Only humans have buttocks," explains Heather Radke, journalist and author of Butts: A Backstory.
The muscle and bone parts (of this matter) are quite well studied. The muscles are big, they're the biggest muscles in your body... the other half (of the butt question) is the fat and it's much more complicated or at least less well known."
