The consensus of most scientists is that the dinosaurs became extinct due to a massive asteroid impact on Earth about 66 million years ago. Now there is a horrendous discovery, namely the remains of the asteroid.
In research in North Dakota, United States, which recorded some of the evidence of the asteroid's destruction, scientists thought they had found the remains of the space rock in ancient sap.
At the site, previously found remains of fish, turtles, and dinosaur legs that were thought to have died when the asteroid hit. Even the dinosaur was also said to have died right when the asteroid impact occurred.
The fossil was mixed with plants that appeared to have been swept away by waves triggered by Earth's intense tremors from the impact of an asteroid estimated to be 10 kilometers long.
Now, Robert De Palma from the University of Manchester, who led this research, said that his party may have found traces of asteroids in small spheres of tree sap from that fateful day.
"In the sap, we found several spheres that were basically immortalized because like insects stored in the sap, water could not enter it. So it was perfectly preserved," he said as quoted by CNN.
From there, the rock fragments thought to be an asteroid were taken. Most of it is rich in calcium, probably from limestone on the Yucatan Peninsula, the site of the asteroid impact. From initial research, the rock remains are believed to have come from outer space.
Further research is still needed to confirm this. "A possible example of a small fragment of an asteroid hitting Earth, the fact that it is very awake, would be quite remarkable," said Jim Garvin, an astronomer who studies asteroid collisions.
