Apple's Director of Machine Learning Resigns Due to Return To Office Instructions

Apple lost their machine learning division director Ian Goodfellow because of a return to office order issued on April 11th. According to The Verge reporter Zoe Schiffer, Goodfellow issued a memo to staff in which he believes flexibility is a better policy for his team. Due to lack of flexibility he resigned.

Goodfellow's resignation was detrimental to Apple because he was given the title of "father of general adversarial networks (GAN)" used in some artificial intelligence systems. Prior to working at Apple since 2019, Goodfellow worked at Google for six years.

Apple is directing staff to return to the office three days a week starting next May 23 for new hybrid working hours after the pandemic. At Google permission to work forever at home was given to some teams even after the pandemic ended.

The issue of working from home is hotly debated around the world. In Malaysia in a survey last year, 69% of respondents wanting to stay working from home had to be given but employers wanted to return to the old norm.
